Read what others are saying about "The Protected"
True Sight and Mystic Vision,

Fantasy and romance fiction lovers alike are in for a delightful and
surprising read as author Rowena Portch presents The Protected, book one
of the Spirian Series. Portch successfully gifts the reader with a
heroine and a story that will capture as well as excite the imagination,
deeply satisfying the avid reader's hunger for freshness with a style
and plot line all her own.
Skye is a blind massage therapist with special gifts and a bright
spirit that has attracted the wrong attention. Skye's power to heal has
been noticed, making her the coveted target of those who would steal her
freedom and manipulate her gifts. The fate of her race rests on choices
she must make. Poised in the balance point of shifting powers, Skye
must choose her loyalties well. One wrong choice will tip the balance
between redemption and destruction. If she falters, she dooms not only
her race but all of humanity. Vulnerable in ways that would terrify and
immobilize lesser spirits, Skye transcends the circumstances of her
blindness to wage a battle for Spirit and for all of us.
Portch has drawn from her own life and history to write Skye's
character and world, sharing in a way that only a skilled and talented
writer can--the very personal experience of blindness. Not only has
Portch succeeded to write a blind character in a sighted world, she has
done so in such a way as to create a world paradigm, characters, and
circumstances that elevate this book from the ranks of a good story to
that of a great read. The Protected is full of rich descriptions, breath
catching tension, humor, and desire, with characters that come to life
and walk off the page to live in you. With a voice and experience
uniquely her own, author Rowena Portch will make you believe the world
she writes and you will seek it inside yourself.

A Fun Entertaining Fantasy, June 9, 2010
Rowena Portch's fantasy novel, The Protected, Book 1 in the Spirian
Series was a pleasant surprise. Her imagination, writing skills and
willingness to weave portions of her own life experiences into this
exciting fictional tale brought it to life.
Main character, Skye Taylor, like the author, is a blind Massage
Therapist in her 40's who lives in the state of Washington.
Though blind, Skye has great gifts that make her the object of
powerful good and evil clans of the Spirian race--not quite human and
not fully spiritual beings who have super powers, live long virile lives
and appear to be much younger than they are.
Mysterious Doctor Khalen Dunning, his powerful father figure, Case
and Case's father Shanuk, are leaders of the Protector clan while
Khalen's twin brother, Traeger and their biological father Damon, are
the leaders of the evil Shadow clan. Both groups believe that Skye is
the foretold legendary gifted woman who can tip the balance of powers
and their clan's future through her offspring. Each clan wants their
twin member to mate with Skye.
A Skeptic at the onset, Rowena quickly grabbed and held my interest
and left me looking forward to reading her next exciting book in this
series.

The Protected (Book 1 of the Spirian series),
April

This excellently written novel had me from the first sentence. It is
absolutely brilliant. It is a combination of so many things. It is a
love story that is tender and realistic. It is a mystery that has you
reading as fast as you can to find out what is at the next turn. It is a
lesson in both good and evil and how the powers thereof are in each of
us. There are nuggets of wisdom/lessons in it that make you look at your
own life. It combines the real world with the supernatural world.
There is no way I can wait for the next book without reading this a few
times more. I would HIGHLY recommend this book, especially to bookclubs
because there is so much to talk about. . . It is simply put. . .
brilliant. . . . .brilliant. . . . . brilliant. . . .. .Oprah needs a
copy of this one. . . as does any reader. . . .
